MIDWIFERY CLINICAL MENTOR

Main responsibilities of the position

The main objective of the MIDWIFERY clinical mentor is to directly support midwives and learning activities in the MSF Hospital / Maternity Wards (and partly in CHC Hangha), as part of their continuous professional development (CPD). S/he will provide mentoring – bedside observation, formative assessments and bed-side teaching.

The midwifery clinical mentor will also be required to propose improvement of clinical mentoring tools, and to assist the MWLD to deliver it in theory sessions and to participate in the evaluation of learning activities and skills acquired by the learners. All the above will be conducted according to MSF values, policies and protocols and universal health standards, in order to provide a high-quality Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) services to the population.  

 

Accountabilities

  • Progress the content of learning activities consistent with the skills targeted to be developed (according to the learners’ curriculum), in coordination with the MWLD, and with Maternity PMR and with the support of the Midwifery referent of the MSF Academy for Healthcare (who consults with SRH advisors).
  • Deliver these contents in an active way, through interactive learning sessions, alternative pedagogical methodologies and by providing bedside training.
  • Mentor learners – develop individual mentor-mentee relationship, monitor closely the progress of the learners, in order to adapt the implementation of the learning activities accordingly.
  • Support midwives in the ward areas with completing personal learning journals and maintaining professional practice and continuing professional development.  
  • Identify priority subjects/techniques to be addressed during the following training sessions and participate in developing the content of these training courses.
  • Methodically support supervisors in maternity wards in their mentoring approach and involve them in bedside observations and mentoring. 
  • Keep the MSF Academy Representative well informed of the learning activities and discuss any difficulties or challenges encountered in order to find solutions together.
  • Participate in the evaluation and monitoring of the objectives of MSF Academy in the country.

 

Required Criteria

Education: Diploma of Midwife (or any Diploma recognized in the country and /or the Ministry of Health to practice as such)

Knowledge: Mentoring methodology

Computer literacy (word, excel and internet)

Updates his/her knowledge before each mission, according to the most updated MSF pro-tocols 

TRAINING OF FACILITATORS AND MENTORS will be provided by HQ at the beginning of the mission

Experience: Minimum 2 years’ experience as Midwife 

At least 2 years’ experience working in a hospital structure, including working in delivery room

Previous work experience with MSF or another NGOs is a plus

Experience in mentoring, training, facilitation or tutoring  

Languages: Excellent command of English, both written and spoken
