Action Against Hunger is an International Non-Governmental Organization that is charitable, impartial, non-political, independent and non-profit making, with headquarter in Paris, France. Action Against Hunger has humanitarian programs in more than 41 countries, assisting victims of war, disease and famine. In Sierra Leone Action Against Hunger was established in 1991. Action Against Hunger overall objective in these contexts is to fight against hunger and this is achieved through the implementation of nutrition, health, food security and water & sanitation projects. Emergency relief responses to immediate needs are usually followed by longer-term activities aiming to enable affected populations to regain their self-sufficiency. Action Against Hunger is implementing programmes with support from the following donors: UK AID (DfID), Irish Aid, SIDA and AFP

 

Action Against Hunger is seeking highly motivated and dynamic candidates to join its vibrant team for the position below:

 

Communications Officer

 

START DATE: June 18th  2018

COMPETITIVE SALARY PACKAGE and ALLOWANCES

DURATION OF CONTRACT: Three months (Maternity cover)  

LOCATION:  Sierra Leone ( Freetown)  

NUMBER OF POSITIONS : 1 (One)

PROBATION PERIOD- Four (4) Weeks

SUPERVISED BY : Advocacy HoD

INTERNALLY LIAISES WITH: Heads of Departments (WASH, Food Security and Livelihood,

                                                       Logistics, Finance, Human Resources and Field Coordinators

DIRECTLY SUPERVISES: NONE

FUNCTIONAL SUPERVISION: Advocacy Advisor

 

Job Objective:Ensure the overall communication for the mission and Action Against Hunger visibility in country

Key Responsibilities :

The Communication and Advocacy is in charge of:

  • Participate in meetings with partners to represent Action Against Hunger
  • Provide technical support to the Country Director for public relations and representation
  • Develop relationships and networking with local and international media (regular meetings, cooperation, etc.)
    • Define and formulate the main communication messages for the mission and ensure consistency of Action Against Hunger communication messages and actions in country
    • Organise and manage local communication activities (e.g. press conference, radio discussion, etc.) and campaigns to maximize Action Against Hunger visibility and advocacy action
    • Ensure the respect of Action Against Hunger new brand identity for any communication or visibility material or activity
    • Ensure the respect of visibility guidelines from donors and respect of communication commitments within proposals
    • Create and update mapping of actors and a database of external contacts (donors, UN, NGOs, authorities, media, etc.)
    • Ensure media watch
    • Propose communication activities in proposals
    • Develop communication plans for each project (in cooperation the project’s team) and supervise its implementation
    • Develop visibility plans for each project (in cooperation the project’s team) and supervise its implementation
    • Train the teams on communication tools they have to use (beneficiary data collection tools, weekly updates from basis, etc.)
    • Provide technical support to Program Managers for sensitization campaigns in relation with their activities (planning, development of IEC materials, development of jingles’ scripts, etc.)
      • Organize and manage field visits related to communication (media visits, HQ staff visits, communication agencies visits, etc.)
      • Collect and file photos (and videos) from ACF activities and projects to develop the photo bank of the mission (to be used for reports, beneficiary stories, case studies or any other material), and ensure that all projects are covered
      • Coordinate the collection of beneficiary data/testimonies by projects’ team for the development of beneficiary stories and case studies, and collect those directly when necessary
      • Contribute to reporting of communication activities for internal reports and donors reports
      • supports (press release, leaflet, banners, beneficiary data collection tools, etc.) ensuring the respect of Action Against Hunger new brand identity
      • Identify needs for new communication tools and develop them accordingly
      • Disseminate the communication tools to the mission (all bases or relevant staff)
  • Briefing of staff arriving on the mission on communication-related issues (role and responsibilities of the Communication Officer, role and responsibilities of the new staff in terms of communication, etc.)

Qualifications required:

  • Masters/BSC Degree in Journalism, Linguistics and social  Sciences
  • 2-4 years professional experience in media/communication sector (NGO or Corporate) in Sierra Leone
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Proven skills in effective media relations
  • Proven experience in working with radio and social media 
  • Knowledge in nutrition and WASH issues is preferred.

Required Competence and Skills:  

  • Strong management skills and pro-activity
  • Excellent communication, networking and representation skills
  • Skills in facilitating training for a large group
  • Good team worker, facilitator and organizer Enthusiastic self-starter
  • Ability to prioritize and meet changing deadlines
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office packages
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage stress
  • Previous experience working with INGO
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Proven skills in effective media relations
  • Proven experience in working with radio and social media 
  • Knowledge in nutrition and WASH issues is preferred.
