Job Summary

Based on CARE’s own experience and global evidence, we recognize that addressing gender inequality and women’s empowerment is an effective strategy for reducing poverty and tackling social injustice. This focus also stems from a firm commitment to the right of all people to live free of poverty. CARE promotes the empowerment of women and girls, engages with men and boys to transform unequal power relations and address gender inequality, including gender-based violence. We have a particular emphasis on strengthening the voice of women and girls and enabling them to effectively participate in and influence the decisions that affect their lives. With our partners we will also be a strong voice at the international level on the importance of women and girls’ participation.

 

It is a key position driving the CO to work with and build alliances with key partners for women empowerment and gender equality. The Advocacy and Gender Coordinator position plays a critical role on engaging with and influencing governments, civil society and the private sector. This position brings CARE to participate in and strengthen advocacy alliances at all levels from the grassroots to the national level, and when relevant engage with the regional level. This position builds internal capacities and those of partners to become agents of change.

 

The Advocacy and Gender Coordinator position will report to the Senior Program Officer of CARE Sierra Leone. The Advocacy and Gender Coordinator position will be based in Freetown to conduct advocacy for the gender program of CARE in Sierra Leone and for more impact and effectiveness.

 

Key responsibilities of Position

  • Responsibility of raising the profile of CARE Sierra Leone as a partner of choice in gender and advocacy.

 

  • Responsible for managing CARE Sierra Leone’s advocacy efforts from development to implementation including producing issue analyses, policy proposals, campaign messages, campaign strategies, action alerts and building capacity of grassroots activism.

 

  • Ensure gender and advocacy are integrated in programming and maintain high quality.

 

  • Manage relations between CARE Sierra Leone and partners at the national and international levels working and/or advocating for women and girls empowerment.

Qualifications

Required:

  • At least a Degree in Social studies, Gender studies, International Relations, Development studies, or related areas, Master Degree is an asset.

Experience

  • Preferably a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in Advocacy and Gender activities with high profile institutions / governments, and advocacy skills, conducting gender impact assessments and/or designing/implementing gender and development projects.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English, and basic French required.

  • Good knowledge of result-based programme required.

  • Excellent knowledge on computer skills is necessary.

  • Desired strong reporting skills.
