Food and Nutrition Security Network Facilitator

Organisation Profile

Deutsche Welthungerhilfe (WHH) was founded as the National Committee for the Freedom from Hunger Campaign of the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) in 1962. Today, WHH is one of the largest private development organisations in Germany. As a non-profit, non‐political and non-denominational organisation WHH is committed to fight hunger and poverty in currently more than 50 countries all over the world. In Sierra Leone WHH has been implementing development and relief projects since 2003.

Project Description

WHH’s is implementing a project titled: Linking Agriculture, Natural Resource Management and Nutrition (LANN), funded by Irish Aid. Due to food and nutrition insecurity in the country, the government of Sierra Leone and its partners have introduced several programmes to increase productivity by supporting smallholder farmers, setting up Agricultural Business Centres and diversifying agricultural production.

Despite all the efforts made so far by various interventions, the food insecurity situation in the targeted districts of Kenema and Tonkolili remains alarming. Therefore, WHH in partnership with Concern Worldwide will be implementing a twelve months LANN project in the Kenema and Tonkolili districts. LANN aims to improve the food and nutrition security of vulnerable rural communities through an integrated community-based approach. LANN centers on a participatory nutrition education approach empowering women groups and their households to take action and address their problems, with supporting interventions in agriculture for cultivation of nutritious crops and WASH for promotion of improved hygiene practices and self-supply technologies for household sanitation. The project furthermore aims to strengthen food and nutrition security coordination mechanisms and inter-sectorial learning at district and national level through close cooperation with and capacity building of line ministries, networks and district councils.
