Community Hygiene Promoter (2 positions)


Location: Freetown

Reporting to: Urban WASH Behaviour Change Supervisor

Contract duration: 6 months (renewable)


Overall Purpose of the role:

The Community Hygiene Promoter will be responsible for the community mobilisation, hygiene promotion and cholera preparedness components of community-led water, sanitation.and hygiene. (WASH) projects in disadvantaged urban communities in Freetown. He/she will strive to:

Develop community capacity to maximise and sustain health benefits from

improvements in water and sanitation infrastructure.

Promote and facilitate healthy hygiene behaviours throughout the community, including hand-washing, proper use of water and safe disposal of faeces.

Reinforce community capacity to respond rapidly and effectively to outbreaks of water-borne disease, especially Cholera.


Key Responsibilities

Facilitate the participatory development of community-led plans to improve water access and safety, promote positive hygiene behaviours and prepare for cholera outbreaks.

Support the formation of effective and?democratic community WASH


Participate in training community volunteers on resource mobilisation, financial management, hygiene promotion and cholera preparedness

and response.

Oversee the implementation of community plans, including mobilisation and motivation of volunteers, and delivery of health promotion activities. Contribute to the development of effective behaviour change

communication (BCC) products.

Work in partnership with local health facilities to build their capacity to respond quickly and effectively to outbreaks of diarrhoeal disease. Liaise^ with representatives of relevant organisations, including GVWC, MoHS, and other NGOs and community-based organizations.

Monitor project progress in the communities and prepare weekly and

Participate in GOAL'S Biannual Freetown community survey and coordinate project evaluation workshops.

Collaborate closely with GOAL Health, Engineering and Partnership teams.

Build and maintain good relationships with community members and leaders, GOAL staff and representatives of other organizations.

Supervise the activities of BFV’s in sensitizing communities in Cholera risk hot-spots on Cholera key messages.

Monitors the distribution of Cholera prevention materials in identified Cholera hot-spots.

Compiles data records provided by the BFV’s, inputs and sends by mail to the line-manager.

Comply with GOAL’S Child Protection and HIV Policies at all times. Perform other duties as required by the line manager Requirements.

Qualification in public health, environmental health, health promotion, community development or it related subject.

At least three years of professional experience in WASH /environmental health and community mobilisation.

Able to communicate effectively and build strong relationships with people in many different environments.

Good English language skills.,

Able to work independently and act on own initiative.

Good negotiation and conflict resolution skills.

Previous experience working in a. similar role in another NGO/ humanitarian organization is an as'iet.

Strong experience of conducting / organising workshops, trainings or meetings.

Capable of producing reliable and timely reports and familiar with community research methods.

Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
